Part 3 &#8211; Calming the Seas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Note &#8211; Lighthouse image was used with permission from Ranveig Marie Photography.\u00a0 Check out her stuff here:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ranveigmariephotography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ranveigmariephotography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ranveig\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flickr<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is part three of a multi-part post describing the tuning of Single Channel Architecture\/Virtual Cell and taming ChromeOS roaming behaviors.\u00a0 Part one can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/badger-fi.com\/2018\/12\/06\/distantbeacons-part1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 Part two can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/2019\/02\/01\/distantbeacons-part2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We are very densely populated with access points to accommodate at least 50-60 devices per classroom at any given time.\u00a0 Because of this AP density it is necessary to make adjustments to the network on occasion.<\/p>\n<p>As indicated in part two, pcaps determined that we were decoding beacon frames with valid FCS into the high -80s dBm, all with the same BSSID (Virtual Cell).\u00a0 Even though there were several different devices consuming wifi in the area, Chromebooks were hyper sensitive to the fluctuating SNR and were the only device type continuously performing four way handshakes due to a triggered roam (SNR &lt;=18).<\/p>\n<p>Since we are so densely populated with access points (to meet requirements), the only way to tune away the issue was to increase the minimum base transmit rate even further (from 24 Mbps).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_784\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-784\" style=\"width: 1322px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-784 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/24mbpsbasetransmitrate.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1322\" height=\"250\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-784\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">24 Mbps Base Transmit Rate &#8211; 5 GHz Radio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>TX power is already reduced to a level that provides proper overlap between classrooms to satisfy requirements.\u00a0 Increasing the minimum base transmit rate to 36 Mbps was done first but did not yield the results that I wanted to see.\u00a0 I then increased the minimum base transmit rate to 48 Mbps (also leaving the supported rates of 24 and 36 Mbps) and ran another pcap.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_785\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-785\" style=\"width: 1318px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-785 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/48mbpsbasetransmitrates.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1318\" height=\"254\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-785\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">48 Mbps Base Transmit Rate &#8211; 5 GHz Radio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This time I was receiving most beacons with valid FCS in the mid -70s dBm.\u00a0 Further testing with the Chromebooks showed the results I wanted to see.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/tunedbeacon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-786 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/tunedbeacon.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unnecessary (triggered) roams were <strong>dramatically<\/strong> reduced and performance was much better.\u00a0 Beacon overhead was decreased by 50% which is indicative of moving from 24 to 48 Mbps minimum base rate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-771 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/screenshot2018-10-09at1.22.34pm.png?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-770 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/screenshot2018-10-09at1.19.47pm.png?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"232\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We ended up testing this configuration change at a couple of our high schools of similar layout, design, and requirements with very good results.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Note &#8211;
