{"id":26,"date":"2016-05-10T09:00:35","date_gmt":"2016-05-10T13:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/badger-fi.com\/?p=25"},"modified":"2016-05-10T09:00:35","modified_gmt":"2016-05-10T13:00:35","slug":"metageek-chanalyzer-plus-cisco-cleanair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.badger-fi.com\/?p=26","title":{"rendered":"MetaGeek Chanalyzer Plus Cisco CleanAir"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What I am about to write about is nothing new.\u00a0 Some of my wifi peers have written about Chanalyzer and Cisco CleanAir or various aspects of each or both before.\u00a0 I am going to take you through my journey to get a lightweight Cisco 3502i converted back to autonomous code and connected to MetaGeek&#8217;s Chanalyzer.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose I should fill you on what my intent is with this project so you don&#8217;t have to wonder why I am going about it the way that I am.\u00a0 I currently use MetaGeek&#8217;s Wi-Spy DBx with Chanalyzer on a regular basis and it does everything I need it to do.\u00a0 When I found out I could get an even higher resolution layer 1 view with a Cisco AP that supports CleanAir, I had to give it a try.\u00a0 This was done with no other reason than &#8220;just because.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/3502ipoeinjector.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-96 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/3502ipoeinjector.png?w=300\" alt=\"3502iPOEInjector\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cisco 3502i with CleanAir<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You might say that the DBx is my &#8220;go to&#8221; tool when I first arrive onsite to check out an issue.\u00a0 I love MetaGeek because their products are excellent and their staff are top notch.\u00a0 Whether you are working with inSSIDer, EyePA, or Chanalyzer, you are always dealing with quality.\u00a0 If you ever need help with any of them my buddy <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FuelCellWiFi\">Joel Crane<\/a> is ALWAYS there to help.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_94\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-94\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/laptopdbx1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-94 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/laptopdbx1.png?w=300\" alt=\"LaptopDBx\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-94\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My work laptop with Wi-Spy DBx<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first part of the project began with talking to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/samuel_clements\">Sam Clements<\/a>.\u00a0 He is my go to guy when it comes to Cisco wifi.\u00a0 He gave me some pointers and even hooked me up with ANOTHER 3502i for this project.\u00a0 Sam had previously hooked me up with two other 3502i APs because he felt bad for me and my single 1131 connected to my Cisco WLC 2504.\u00a0 When the 3502i arrived I put Sam&#8217;s advice into action.\u00a0 I connected the lightweight 3502i to my WLC 2504 to get it&#8217;s code upgraded to 8.2.100.0.\u00a0 Upon completion I took my nice fresh copy of autonomous AP code (ap3g1-k9w7-tar.153-3) and loaded it to the 3502i.\u00a0 I SSH&#8217;ed into the WLC and issued the following command:<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_70\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70\" style=\"width: 718px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/downgradeapcommand.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-70 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/downgradeapcommand.png\" alt=\"DowngradeAPCommand\" width=\"718\" height=\"42\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Where [IP] is your TFTP server IP and [AP_NAME] is the name of the AP in the WLC<\/figcaption><\/figure>The process took a few minutes and the AP rebooted a couple of times.\u00a0 Everything is straight forward at this point and you can watch the progress of the &#8220;downgrade&#8221; via your console output if you have consoled into the AP.\u00a0 Once the process is complete you will recognize that the AP has good ol&#8217; IOS running on it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72\" style=\"width: 742px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/5niner-specexshowver.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-72 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/5niner-specexshowver.png\" alt=\"5NINER-SpecExShowVer\" width=\"742\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CLI output of &#8216;show version&#8217; on autonomous AP 3502i<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At this point most of the heavy lifting has been done.\u00a0 At the advice of Sam, I configured the BVI with an IP address and created a DHCP pool.\u00a0 This was done to allow for easy connection to the AP via Ethernet cable and POE injector directly from my laptop.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76\" style=\"width: 497px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/bvi_ip1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-76 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/bvi_ip1.png\" alt=\"BVI_IP\" width=\"497\" height=\"58\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Configuring BVI1 with an IP address<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74\" style=\"width: 569px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/5niner-specexdhcp.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/5niner-specexdhcp.png\" alt=\"5NINER-SpecExDHCP\" width=\"569\" height=\"101\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Configuring DHCP pool<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For my particular application I chose to use a POE injector to power my AP.\u00a0 I do not have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.terra-wave.com\/shop\/80211n-mimo-site-survey-battery-pack-p-1535.html\">survey rig battery<\/a> and I needed something a little more portable.\u00a0 If you do have a survey rig battery you should check out this blog post from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NoLANWiFi\">Nolan Herring<\/a>:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/nolanwifi.com\/2016\/04\/22\/spectrum-box\/\">https:\/\/nolanwifi.com\/2016\/04\/22\/spectrum-box\/<\/a>.\u00a0 He has built something called a Spectrum Box, also with the help of Sam (that Sam guy is all over the place).<\/p>\n<p>Now that you have connectivity between your laptop and AP you have to tell the radios in the 3502i that they need to be evaluating the spectrum and not serving up wifi.\u00a0 This mode is also known as SE-Connect mode.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78\" style=\"width: 379px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/5niner-specexdot11_0.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-78 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/5niner-specexdot11_0.png\" alt=\"5NINER-SpecExDot11_0\" width=\"379\" height=\"36\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Configuring the 2.4 GHz radio for spectrum analysis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79\" style=\"width: 377px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/5niner-specexdot11_1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/5niner-specexdot11_1.png\" alt=\"5NINER-SpecExDot11_1\" width=\"377\" height=\"33\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Configuring the 5 GHz radio for spectrum analysis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The AP is now fully configured for use with Chanalyzer.\u00a0 At this point I was super excited but I was soon met with disappointment.\u00a0 I had failed to realize previously that connecting to a CleanAir AP with Chanalyzer was an additional <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metageek.com\/products\/wi-spy\/chanalyzer-accessories\/\">feature <\/a>that would require a purchase.\u00a0 I quickly got in touch with Joel at MetaGeek and let him know of my predicament.\u00a0 He graciously provided me with a key enabling the CleanAir feature so that I could continue my project.\u00a0 A big thank you goes out to Joel and MetaGeek for providing me with this feature so that my project did not come to a screeching halt.<\/p>\n<p>We are now at the point where we can open our trusty ol&#8217; Chanalyzer.\u00a0 This is where everything that us DBx folk are used to, will change.\u00a0 Once you have Chanalyzer open you will notice there is a menu named CleanAir (as long as you have purchased this feature).\u00a0 When you click on CleanAir it will prompt you with some options.\u00a0 If this is your first time connecting to a CleanAir AP you should select &#8220;Connect to a CleanAir AP.&#8221;\u00a0 You will then be prompted with a box that looks like this:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_85\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-85\" style=\"width: 502px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/connecttocleanair1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-85 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/connecttocleanair1.png\" alt=\"ConnectToCleanAir\" width=\"502\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-85\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Connect to CleanAir AP box<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Enter the AP&#8217;s IP address (in my case it is the default gateway given to me by the DHCP services on the AP), enter the NSI key, and enter a friendly name.\u00a0 You might be asking yourself what an NSI key is, much like I was.\u00a0 It is a unique code that is used like a password so that Chanalyzer can connect to a CleanAir AP.\u00a0 You can get the NSI key from the AP by issuing the following command from the CLI:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82\" style=\"width: 363px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/5niner-specexshowspectrumstatus.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-82 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/5niner-specexshowspectrumstatus.png\" alt=\"5NINER-SpecExShowSpectrumStatus\" width=\"363\" height=\"306\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CLI output of &#8216;show spectrum status&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You&#8217;re In!!!\u00a0 At this point you are ready to check out the detail that the Cognio chipset has to offer inside of a\u00a0 Cisco CleanAir AP!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/dbxcapture.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-86 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/dbxcapture.png?w=840\" alt=\"DBxCapture\" width=\"840\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chanalyzer with DBx<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_84\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/cleanaircapture.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-84 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/badger-fi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/cleanaircapture.png?w=840\" alt=\"Chanalyzer with CleanAir AP\" width=\"840\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-84\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chanalyzer with CleanAir AP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As you can see the resolution of the Cisco CleanAir AP with the Cognio chipset is very clear.\u00a0 Each mode definitely serves it&#8217;s purpose though.\u00a0 The DBx will still be my go to tool in the field but the clarity of the CleanAir AP is hard to beat.\u00a0 If you already have CleanAir APs in service this could be a much more practical remote monitoring solution for you.\u00a0 It should be noted that there are several other use cases\\situations that this could be deployed for.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t have the CleanAir capability with Chanalyzer and you currently have Cisco CleanAir APs, do yourself a favor and visit MetaGeek&#8217;s website and purchase the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metageek.com\/products\/wi-spy\/chanalyzer-accessories\/\">accessory<\/a>.\u00a0 You definitely won&#8217;t be disappointed!<\/p>\n<p>Here is a few blog posts that I read through while completing the project:<\/p>\n<p>Sam Clements &#8211;
